WINE BEHIND THE LABEL

Hotel Jenny

By Sonia Blech

Once a year, we take the car on a long journey from London to Italy to visit family and friends on the way. First stop is around Metz to visit my cousin (by the way, some of the Cathedral stained windows in Metz are painted by Chagall, and the town now has a beautiful brand new museum, another Centre Georges Pompidou - well worth a visit).

Our second stop was in a tiny little village in Alsace, on the Swiss border, just six miles from Basel called Hotel Restaurant Jenny which is the family name of the original owners who came from Switzerland.

The gardens are beautiful and peaceful with lots of trees and water features; you can have aperitifs there or your breakfast on the veranda overlooking the garden. Our bedroom, with a veranda was most comfortable and cheerful with satellite television and Wi Fi.

Our evening meal (14 in GaultMillau) prepared and cooked by Chef Alain Nunninger was of a high standard, using mainly seasonal and local ingredients: Foie Gras Maison (a great speciality in Alsace!) Feuillete Escargots & Girolles - Aspèrges Blanches aux 2 sauces et 2 Jambons ~ (big fat white Asparagus so meaty, tender and sweet!) Cocotte de ris et rognons de veau - cotes de veau aux morilles ~ (in season and delicious!)

Wine: Clos des Lambrays 2003 (delicious and went with everything!)

Dessert just one: Compote de Fraise, Rhubarbe, a l’aspérule en crumble, glace vanille

We also had three aperitifs and some petits fours!

A lovely surprise for me, who loves swimming was a beautiful state of the art indoor swimming pool with sauna, relaxing room towels etc. with generous opening times: from 7 a. m. to 9 p. m! quite a treat!

A nice little buffet breakfast was perfectly adequate - fresh orange juice, good charcuterie and good coffee.

The staff we came across, which is just Madame and a help (may be the daughter?) were fun, generous and attentive. When we booked by phone, on the road, she did not even ask for a credit card number! Just said: “Please, be nice and let us know if you are not coming!”.

This place might not be worth a big detour but is certainly a place to consider if one is nearby and we shall certainly return there.
