Our hotel expectations are quite simple.
Obviously, we are looking for quality service and comfort, but we also appreciate
those little extra touches that could make one's stay truly memorable.
We score out of 100, as follows...
Accommodation... 50
Breakfast... 15
Service... 10
Ambience... 10
Value for money... 15
Any establishment scoring less than 60
will not be rated.
60-69 is worth a try if you are in the area.
70-79 is worth seeking out.
80-89 is worth going a long way for.
90-100 is worth a special pilgrimage.
Being the old cynics that you know we are, no establishment will be rated unless
we have been there on at least two occasions.

Country House Hotels seem to have been all the rage for some time now. There are
a lot of good ones, such as the Daddy of them all, Sharrow Bay Hotel, on Lake Ullswater,
(see how it rates after going strong for 57 years), a lot of bad ones, a lot of overpriced
ones, and a few new upstarts trying to make a name for themselves. Most of them seem
to have a common theme which is that you need a degree in orienteering to find them!
Bombing down narrow lanes, avoiding sheep, foxes, tractors and other vehicles make
it harrowing enough for the out and out townies that we are, so consequently, we
like to find a place where we can be put immediately at ease without having to fill
out a plethora of forms or lugging our suitcases up a steep flight (or two) of narrow,
winding steps, or, even worse, traipsing across the car park to the "coach house".
